Who we are
Ego (the app and this website) is run by VLAI. Ego plans your week with a council of AI “alters”. They read what you write and where your time goes, and book ideas onto your calendar when they have strong evidence it helps your goals. This policy says what we store, why, who else sees it, and how to delete it.
What we store
- Account: your email, a hashed password (never the password itself), or the account id Apple or Google gives us when you sign in with them, and when you agreed to how Ego uses AI.
- Journal: what you write, including what you dictate with Speak. Ego receives only the text, never the audio.
- Your council: your alters, goals, ideas and blocks, votes, plans, disagreements and answers to their questions.
- Places: where you were and for how long, names you give places, and the names of nearby parks, gyms, libraries and cafés around your home and work.
- Calendar: only the start and end times of your events, so the council knows when you’re busy. Event titles, notes and attendees never leave your phone. Ego adds its own events to your calendar.
- Apple Health (only if you allow it): today’s step count and hours of sleep for the last 14 nights. Nothing else.
- Subscription: which plan you have, when it renews or ends, and Apple’s id for the purchase. Apple handles the payment; Ego never sees your card or your Apple ID.
- Device: a push notification token and your time zone.
- Error reports: when the app hits an error, the error message, app version and platform.
- Connected services (only if you connect them): Spotify, Strava, Todoist or Google, with their access tokens stored encrypted.
How we use it
Only to run Ego for you: to let your council think and plan, put blocks on your calendar, send you notifications, keep your account secure and fix problems. Where the law asks for a legal basis, it’s providing the service you signed up for, your consent (for AI processing, location and Apple Health, each of which you can refuse), and our legitimate interest in keeping Ego secure and working.
Who else sees it
- OpenAI runs your alters. Only after you agree in the app, Ego sends it your journal, goals, a summary of your places, when you’re busy and, if allowed, steps and sleep. OpenAI processes it to give us the council’s answers and doesn’t use API data to train its models.
- Apple turns your speech into text when you use Speak, on your iPhone or on Apple’s servers. Ego receives only the text.
- Render hosts our servers and database.
- Expo and Apple deliver push notifications.
- Apple takes subscription payments and tells us when a subscription starts, renews, ends or is refunded.
- OpenStreetMap (through the Overpass service) or Google Places receive the coordinates of places you spend time in — with nothing that identifies you — to find a business name or nearby parks and gyms. Open-Meteo receives an approximate location for the weather. The maps in the app are Apple Maps.
- Apple or Google, if you sign in with them.
We don’t sell your data, show ads, share it with data brokers or track you across other apps and websites. Apple Health data is used only to plan around your energy, never for advertising or marketing.
How long we keep it
- Location history: 360 days, then deleted. Places you named are kept until you delete them or your account.
- Sleep history: the last 14 nights. Error reports: 30 days.
- Everything else: until you delete your account.
Your choices and rights
- Delete everything: Settings → Delete account. It’s erased from our live database right away (backups expire on our hosting provider’s schedule), and Sign in with Apple is revoked.
- Export: Settings → Export my data gives you a PDF of your journal and your council’s ideas. For a copy of anything else, contact us.
- Correct: rename places, edit alters and goals in the app, or contact us.
- Permissions: turn off location, calendar, notifications or Apple Health at any time in iPhone Settings or the Health app.
- Withdraw consent to AI processing: contact us, or delete your account. Without it, the council can’t work.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California), you may have more rights, such as objecting to processing or complaining to your data protection authority.
Security
Data travels encrypted (HTTPS). Your login stays in the iPhone Keychain, passwords are hashed, and tokens for connected services are encrypted at rest. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect yours.
Where it’s processed
Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, we rely on safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
Age
Ego is for people 16 and older. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone younger; if you think someone under 16 has used Ego, contact us and we’ll delete the account.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
